A container packed at a Ho Chi Minh City warehouse and destined for Rotterdam does not usually travel on one vessel; it is loaded onto a feeder ship that sails to Singapore, discharged there and reloaded onto a larger mother vessel that carries it on the long ocean leg to Europe. That transfer is transshipment: the box changes vessels rather than entering the intermediate country’s inland trade. Singapore, Port Klang, Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Colombo run at scale because tens of thousands of boxes make this transfer every week.

Singapore is the archetype. The port handled 44.66 million TEU in 2025, an 8.6 per cent increase on 2024, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). More than 80 per cent of that throughput is transshipment cargo, connecting over 600 ports through the world’s largest transshipment hub network.

The economics of transshipment turn on cost per TEU per nautical mile. An ultra-large container vessel carrying 20,000 TEU on an Asia-Europe round voyage burns fuel and consumes crew hours at a rate that meaningfully undercuts smaller direct services on a per-container basis. The OECD International Transport Forum‘s 2015 analysis of the mega-ship generation calculated that doubling maximum container-ship size over the preceding decade cut total vessel costs per transported container by roughly a third, and that moving from a 16,000 TEU vessel to a 19,000 TEU vessel cuts annual capital cost per TEU-slot by roughly US$69 at typical utilisation. Transshipment through Singapore, Port Klang, Colombo or Port of Tanjung Pelepas is what makes those slot economics accessible to shippers whose export volumes cannot fill a direct call.

The dwell-time constraint is what makes the arithmetic non-trivial. A transshipment box spends time at the hub between discharge and re-load. In normal Singapore operations, that dwell is typically completed within several days, close enough to the next Asia-Europe mother vessel’s departure that the box catches its connection.

When the connection misses, the box waits for the next scheduled Asia-Europe sailing. That is typically five to seven additional days for a major carrier’s weekly service, and up to two weeks for a smaller trade lane. Each additional day at the hub accrues terminal storage charges, which apply to boxes dwelling at the terminal beyond agreed free time, along with reefer power charges for temperature-controlled cargo, and re-scheduling costs that flow through to shippers.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Review of Maritime Transport 2025 documents this pressure at the aggregate. Port waiting times in developed economies rose from 5.2 hours to 6.4 hours between December 2023 and March 2024, and the trend has continued through the Red Sea diversion period. Each hour of aggregate waiting time is many hours of individual container waiting, and the compound effect on transshipment reliability shows up in the missed-connection numbers that carriers do not disclose publicly.

Asia’s transshipment hierarchy sits behind these numbers. Singapore leads at 44.66 million TEU in 2025 (MPA). Port Klang in Malaysia handled 15.14 million TEU in 2025, up 3.4 per cent on 2024, per Malaysian Ministry of Transport data reported through Malay Mail. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), across the Johor Strait from Singapore, handled 14.03 million TEU in 2025 and grew 13.8 per cent on 2024, per MMC Port. Klang is larger than PTP by volume, but PTP is growing at roughly four times Klang’s rate.

The ranking is decided by berth productivity and connection reliability rather than by geographic location. Colombo sits on the Suez-Far East route; Tanjung Pelepas sits inside the Malacca Strait. Both are geographically well-positioned; the question is whether their crane rates and gate-to-gate handling times keep the mother vessels on schedule. When they do, alliance carriers keep the calls. When they slip, the calls move.

For a shipper choosing between direct sailing and transshipment routing, the calculus has always been the same: transshipment is cheaper per TEU but adds a connection risk that most cost comparisons do not price. The connection risk is not a rare event; it is a routine feature of hub operations that becomes expensive when it lands on a shipment with a tight delivery window.

A container’s total cost to Rotterdam has two components: the ocean freight rate and a probability-weighted charge for missing the Singapore connection. Most cost comparisons price only the first.
