DP World Invests in Fremantle Rail Interchange to Boost Western Australia’s Freight Network

Summary

  • DP World has begun construction on an ~$18 million Fremantle Rail Interchange, creating a direct rail gate linking its container terminal to the North Quay Rail Terminal, aiming to cut over 20,000 annual truck movements.
  • The project will boost rail freight share from 22% to 33%, improving supply chain efficiency, reducing emissions, easing congestion and supporting Western Australia’s long-term economic growth.
  • The development is part of DP World’s nearly $1 billion Australia-wide infrastructure investment, creating local jobs and strengthening multimodal freight connectivity across the country.
Fremantle, Western Australia, 2 December 2025 – DP World has welcomed Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, to officially break ground on a new approximately $18 million Fremantle Rail Interchange project -- a major investment in critical infrastructure designed to strengthen Western Australia’s freight network, improve supply chain efficiency, and support the state’s long-term economic growth. The project will deliver a new dedicated rail gate connection linking DP World’s Fremantle container operations directly with the North Quay Rail Terminal, streamlining container transfers within the port precinct and cutting more than 20,000 truck movements a year on internal roads.By shifting more freight by rail – up from 22% to 33% of the total freight volume – the project will deliver measurable gains in productivity and sustainability, reducing emissions, easing congestion, and improving cost efficiency for Western Australian exporters and importers.Minister Saffioti said the project highlighted the strong collaboration between the State Government and the private sector to deliver modern, sustainable freight infrastructure for Western Australia.
“This investment supports the State Government’s vision for a more efficient and sustainable freight network across Western Australia to strengthen our economy and deliver quality local jobs.

“By shifting more freight from road to rail out of Fremantle Port, this investment will reduce congestion, improve road safety, cut emissions, and strengthen Fremantle’s position as a vital gateway for trade and jobs in our State.

“This project will also play an important role in helping to reduce congestion on our roads during the upcoming closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge by reducing heavy truck movements in and around the port precinct.”
Nicolaj Noes, Executive Vice President, Oceania, DP World said, “DP World is committed to building a more connected and efficient logistics network for Western Australia. This new rail gate connection will improve the reliability and efficiency of rail operations at North Quay and make it easier for our customers to move cargo sustainably and cost-effectively. It’s a strong example of how government and industry can work together to deliver infrastructure that improves productivity, reduces costs, and drives long-term economic value. ”
